Solar energy projects bridge the gap in energy access between urban and rural communities. Many remote areas in Tanzania lack grid electricity, leaving them dependent on costly and polluting alternatives like kerosene or diesel. Solar energy provides a cleaner, more affordable, and sustainable solution. It enables:

Improved Health: Reduced reliance on kerosene lamps minimizes indoor air pollution, leading to better respiratory health.

Economic Empowerment: Solar solutions like solar water pumps (e.g., my work at Proactive Solar Pumps Ltd) help farmers irrigate their land efficiently, increasing agricultural yields and incomes.

Access to Basic Services: Solar energy powers healthcare centers, ensuring the availability of refrigeration for vaccines and lighting for emergencies.

2. Influence on Access to Education
Access to electricity is vital for quality education, especially in rural areas. Solar energy projects influence education in several ways:

Extended Study Hours: Solar-powered lights enable students to study after sunset.

E-Learning Opportunities: Electrified schools can use computers and access the internet for modern teaching methods.

Teacher Retention: Electrification improves the quality of life for teachers in rural areas, encouraging them to stay.

My Personal Experience and Examples
Working at Proactive Solar Pumps Ltd since 2019, I have seen firsthand how solar energy transforms lives. For instance:

Agricultural Empowerment: Solar-powered water pumps reduce dependence on erratic rainfall, enabling farmers to grow crops throughout the year. This not only increases food security but also improves community resilience against climate change.

Community Impact: I have installed solar systems for schools and households, witnessing how these installations brighten lives and open up opportunities for children and families.

Capacity Building: As a technician, I contribute to building local expertise, empowering others in my community with knowledge and skills in solar technology.

Examples from Tanzania

How can we effectively engage and mobilize local communities, particularly marginalized groups, to adopt and implement solar energy solutions?
This can be achieved by building value chains in green energy transition. In the case of the coastal region of Kenya, E-Mobility integrates solar in EV infrastructure where surplus energy is affordably sold to members of the communities.

Lidya Beyene

Dorcas Wamalwa This is an important point you raised! Engaging and mobilizing local communities requires a multifaceted approach that not only raises awareness but also ensures accessibility and economic inclusivity.

To deepen this discussion, what specific steps can be taken to ensure that marginalized groups are actively included in every stage of building a sustainable value chain; from production and distribution to consumption and even maintenance of solar energy solutions?

1. Collaborative approach between government, private sector, and end users, who are community members. I am currently leading a consortium project, with this collaborative approach, titled "Electric Mobility For Green Energy and Livelihood Empowerment."
2. Focus the project on the members of the community's traditions and cultural norms. Our project focuses on the coastal regions of Kenya, Mombasa, Kwale, and Kilifi. Mombasa is a. busy city with transport Co2 emission of 49% while Kwale and Kilifi are considered part of the Arid Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) suffering adverse climate change effects and poverty. The region relies on the blue economy for livelihood, hence our projects build value chains around it.
3. Support Solar projects of impact.
Our project develops impactful solutions through our products; E-boats integrated with solar for green transport, Solarized cooling containers to manage losses, E-cooling cargo tricycles, for sustainable transportation, E-vending tricycles for value addition and final market destination.
Our centralized charging centers distribute batteries for last-mile connectivity and the surplus goes to community use.

Saher Rashid Baig Moderator

Bonne chance !
