Youth leading Climate Action
Around the world, young people are increasingly acknowledged as vital contributors to transformative climate action, playing roles such as negotiators, innovators, inventors, entrepreneurs, and agents of change. However, they face a significant shortfall in essential technical, financial, and political resources and support needed to fulfil their aspirations. It is estimated that only a fraction of climate funds goes to youth, and this number further decreases in the case of intersectional funding for women, indigenous youth, and other rights holders.
Youth4Climate Initiative
In response, the Government of Italy and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched the Youth4Climate (Y4C) initiative, set out to identify, support and scale youth-led and youth-inclusive climate breakthroughs globally through the annual Y4C Call for Solutions. The Y4C Call for Solutions is open to 159 countries and territories, including LDCs. Y4C provides up to 30,000 USD to awardees aged 18 to 29, enabling climate innovation driven by young people’s expertise, lived experience and anchored in locally owned approaches. For many young innovators, Y4C support is the first initial boost, helping them to unlock a domino effect of further partnerships, visibility and funding. Youth-led projects receive up to 30,000 USD for an implementation period of up to 2 years.
These awarded youth-led projects are delivering cleaner energy, restoring ecosystems, and creating new jobs as they adapt to Climate Change. Explore this dynamic collection to witness the creativity, determination, and impact of a generation committed to climate leadership.
