Sokhna Mbaye

Hello evryone,

My name is Sokhna Mbaye, a PhD candidate in Nuclear Physics applied to climate studies at UCAD (Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar). My work focuses on using science and technology to address environmental challenges.

I am developing a project called Sentinel-Air, an air quality monitoring solution designed for industrial environments in Senegal. The project combines IoT sensors and artificial intelligence to detect air pollution in real time, send alerts, and help reduce workers’ exposure to harmful fine particles.

As part of the Youth for Climate platform, I would be grateful for your guidance and support to strengthen the project’s impact, improve its implementation, and explore opportunities for development and funding.

Thank you for your attention and support.

Jose Gonzalo Flores

Hi Sokhna, Sentinel-Air sounds like a very impactful initiative, especially because air pollution is often underestimated despite its direct effects on health and communities.

I also find the combination of IoT sensors and AI for real-time monitoring really interesting, particularly in industrial contexts where access to timely environmental data can make a huge difference for prevention and worker protection.

Wishing you success as you continue developing the project and exploring opportunities to scale its impact.

Mame Diarra Bousso THIAW

Hello everyone! My name is Mame Diarra Thiaw and I am from Senegal. I am currently pursuing a Master’s in Managing Science Policy and Practice Interfaces on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (SPIBES). My interests focus on climate change, biodiversity conservation, urban agriculture, and community-based environmental action. I am passionate about connecting science, policy, and local communities to develop sustainable and inclusive climate solutions. I am very excited to learn from all of you and exchange ideas throughout this Movement Building Bootcamp.
One question I have after the session is: how can climate movements better include local and indigenous knowledge while still influencing policy and decision-making at national and international levels?
In many communities, especially in African cities and rural areas, people already have local practices that support resilience and biodiversity conservation. I am curious about how movement building can create stronger bridges between grassroots knowledge, scientific research, and policy action without excluding vulnerable communities from the process.

Jose Gonzalo Flores

Hi Mame Diarra, I think this is a very important question and one that many climate movements are still struggling with.

Too often, local and indigenous knowledge is treated as something to “consult” rather than something that actively shapes decision-making processes. Yet many communities already have deeply valuable practices related to resilience, land management, and biodiversity conservation that are grounded in lived experience.

I also really appreciate your point about building bridges between science, policy, and grassroots action. I believe stronger climate movements will depend on creating spaces where these forms of knowledge can interact more equally rather than hierarchically.

Adamu Garba

Hi! It’s an honor to connect with you here.

My name is Adamu Garba, a PhD researcher in Environmental and Climate Change with professional experience working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Climate, Peace, and Security initiatives. My work focuses on the intersection of climate change, conflict prevention, community resilience, and sustainable development, particularly in vulnerable and conflict-affected communities.

Over the years, I have contributed to the implementation of climate adaptation, renewable energy, livelihood restoration, and peacebuilding interventions, including supporting community peace hubs, sustainable energy solutions, and resilience-building programmes. One of my key achievements has been supporting initiatives that integrate climate action with peacebuilding and local economic sustainability to strengthen community resilience.

I would be delighted to connect further on LinkedIn and exchange knowledge and opportunities. Please feel free to share your profile link.

I'm Magnoudéwa BOUKOULI, from Togo. I currently serve as an Ambassador for the Communes of Greater Lomé, where I actively promote environmental awareness and community engagement.

I am leading a community-based initiative called Hygie Lomé, which focuses on improving waste management practices and promoting environmental protection in local communities.

The project aims to:

Raise awareness about proper waste management
Train young people in waste sorting techniques
Promote waste valorization as a source of opportunity and sustainability

Through this initiative, I seek to empower young people to become active agents of change while contributing to cleaner and healthier communities.

However, I am currently facing a major challenge: despite winning a competition that promised financial support, the funding has not been delivered. This has limited my ability to implement training activities for young people, particularly in waste sorting and recycling.

I am therefore seeking guidance and advice on:

Alternative funding opportunities
Strategies to sustain and scale the project
Ways to build strong partnerships and ensure long-term impact

I strongly believe that with the right support and mentorship, Hygie Lomé can make a meaningful contribution to environmental sustainability in Togo.

Thank you.
